The performer shows the backs of seven cards—all red. He then shows the cards’ faces,
explaining that he has two each of three Jacks, and one lone Jack—the Jack of Diamonds. Four
of the Jacks are laid on the table side by side, face-up. The other three are counted face-down
and laid on the table in a stack. A Magic Card is introduced, carefully wrapped in aluminium foil. This card, which emits *M-rays,” is harmless to the spectators, as long as they are exposed to it for only a short time.
The stack of three face-down Jacks is given a
Tap, and then counted to show that there are now four cards-a partner has been found for the Jack of Diamonds. The four face-up Jacks are also given a tap, and when they are flipped over, their backs are seen to have changed to blue, The four blue-backed cards and the four
red-backed cards are arranged alternately in a row of eight. The entire row of cards is given a tap with the “M-ray” Card,
and when they are flipped over as a group, are seen to have changed to *Jack-Aces”—that is, there is a Jack and Ace of Clubs together, followed by a
Jack and Ace of Hearts, followed by the Jacks and Aces of Spades and Diamonds.
